Dr. Eggman uses a powerful energy weapon to split the Earth apart and awaken Dark Gaia, a creature of pure darkness. In the process, Sonic is infused with Dark Gaia’s energy, giving him a monstrous nighttime transformation. After being cast into space, Sonic lands on the broken Earth, where he befriends a small, amnesiac creature he names Chip. Together, they travel across the world to restore the planet by reactivating the Gaia Temples and defeating Dark Gaia.
After crash-landing, Sonic meets a small, floating, dog-like creature with no memory of who he is. Since the creature has forgotten his name, Sonic decides to call him Chip. Chip quickly becomes Sonic’s companion as they set off on a journey to restore the world. They soon meet Professor Pickle, a knowledgeable scholar who explains that only the seven Gaia Temples around the world can reassemble the shattered planet. Each temple houses a Chaos Emerald, and by restoring the emeralds’ power, Sonic can piece the continents back together.
